Sally Scuba opens the first programme by explaining what is in this weeks show.
BIG BLUE BUBBLES The Concept :- Scuba Diving is becoming one of the fastest developing sports, with courses, qualifications and equipment coming down in price as competition grows. Children are fascinated with the ocean, the creatures within and the idea of Swimming underwater, breathing by way of a tank on their back. Most adults can remember ‘Mike Nelson’ of Sea Hunt or Jaques Cousteau as pioneer divers and heroes, the kids of today have no such figure to admire and aspire to. There is a lot that children can do from the age of 8 which is not well known. Even younger kids can play at being a scuba diver. Big Blue Bubbles is about education, excitement, and showcasing some of the wonders of the undersea world.
We propose two options for consideration. The first is for children up to the age of 8 or 9 presented by 2 young, qualified and experienced divers. Children will want to grow up to be just like “Sally Scuba” or "Dan Diver" our presenters.
A typical episode would start with “Sally” highlighting what’s bubbling in this week show. This would include a regular visit to the Great Barrier Reef to see a new fish species each week. This would be either cute, like Clown Anemone fish or Turtles, educational with Parrotfish, or a little scary, Stingrays or Sharks.
Sally would also talk over footage from other countries, like, Manta Rays from the Maldives, or Turtle farms and release programs in Bonaire, or Stingray city in Grand Cayman.
Sally would each week introduce the Kids to a ‘Scuba Sign’ which divers use to identify and communicate what they see underwater, e.g. this week’s letter is T so she demonstrates the signs for a Turtle, Triggerfish, Trumpetfish etc etc.
Each episode would also follow a group of kids taking the PADI, “Bubblemaker” or “Seal Team” courses
There is a group of animated characters, including Angie the Angelfish, Boxer the box file and Toot the trumpetfish. They interact with the presenters and add fun and the ability to get safety and health massages across.
The second concept is for children from 8 to 14.
This show would feature our presenters in their early 20’s again with experience of diving and marine life.
The show would be more factual and educational. It would possibly start with the presenters showing a piece of diving equipment like the scuba tank, the weight belt, regulator etc and explain in simple terms what it is, what it does and why it is important.
Again the presenters would showcase a dive site, with fish species or maybe a wreck or historical site. The presenter would be seen diving the area and voice over with an appropriate commentary.
The show would follow a group of 12 year olds going through their Padi open water certificate, from classroom to pool, to open water dives, and then receiving their “C” card. It would then follow a couple of the newly qualified divers on their first diving adventures both in Australia and possibly overseas on family holidays.
Another segment would be our presenters interviewing famous people who scuba dive. There are many people in sport, arts, and media who have qualified as divers and do a few dives a year here and on overseas holidays. The guest would be asked where they learned to dive, and recall stories of their diving experiences and where their favorite dive location is.
Our presenters would visit dive sites around Australia showcasing the best this country has to offer in the undersea world.
Every few episodes the presenters would dive in the large aquarium in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth etc and interview the teams who take care of the marine animals.
Other items which could be included either each week or regularly, would be visits to dive destinations in Australia and overseas, i.e. Fiji, Vanuatu, Bali etc that offer facilities for kids to join in on a Padi or other program.
Another slot could be about snorkeling, which all kids can do, both from a safety, and fun aspect.
